Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) will take over the £1.2million a year running of Selby District Council's leisure services from Tuesday 1 September; the historic ten-year deal is set to benefit people living in the Selby district and Greater Manchester and will begin with an official handover at the Abbey Leisure Centre, Selby.
The not-for-profit leisure trust was appointed after a lengthy tendering process and was awarded the management contract for its strong track record of delivering the highest quality leisure services and also because of its vision of expanding sport in the community and improving health through sport, both of which support Selby District Council's healthier communities long-term goal.
One of the first roles of the Trust will be managing a series of key improvements to facilities at the Abbey Leisure Centre, including:
- expanding the gym and creating a new aerobic suite;
- creating a new first floor health suite with sauna, steam room and members' lounge;
- creating a new multi-purpose room for functions, meetings and day time creche activities; and
- developing new catering services with better support for functions.
The innovative arrangement between Selby District Council and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust also includes the transfer of services at Tadcaster Leisure Centre and Selby Park. A full review of the Tadcaster Centre and how services and facilities there can be improved is now being carried out.
Chair of Selby District Council's Social Board, Cllr Gillian Ivey, said, "Working in this way means the Council can get a better deal for local residents.
"We're able to access greater levels of funding to draw-in new investment to improve facilities. We're also able to call on the expertise of a dedicated leisure organisation to deliver even better services for our residents. This work is part of our key long-term goals of supporting healthier communities, making better use of resources and organising to deliver.
"Alongside the planned improvements at the Abbey Leisure Centre in Selby, we're also looking at how best to improve facilities in Tadcaster too."
In Wigan, the contract is a major achievement for an organisation founded just six years ago. Chief Executive of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Rodney Hill, added, "This contract is a fantastic endorsement for our achievements in Wigan.
"Improving facilities, increasing choice and extending programmes in local leisure centres to get more people fit, active and, ultimately, improving people's lives.
"Both the people of Wigan and Selby will benefit though this new deal. For those in Wigan, it means our business portfolio is enhanced, expanding our interests. In Selby, we will bring our experience and expertise to deliver the kind of leisure facilities and programme to match everyone's aspirations."
The transfer of services takes place on Tuesday 1 September. Customers will be able to access their local services as usual, without interruption.”
